Kids in Common is supporting SB 1235 (Steinberg) which requires schools with excessive levels of student suspensions to adopt evidence-based, schoolwide strategies to reduce the use of suspensions and improve academic achievement and attendance.

SB 1235 supports the work we have been doing the past couple of years to support alternatives to school suspensions for issues considered "discretionary." SB 1235 also aligns with our promotion of Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports (PBIS) as a strategy that creates supportive and caring school environments by teaching consistent and positive behavioral expectations.
