Children's Agenda - Goal 2
| Goal 2: Children are prepared for and successful in school | |
Indicator 5: Third Grade Reading Proficiency The Issue: Overall, only 50% of our third grade students perform at the advanced or proficient levels on third grade reading tests. When we look closer at the data, we find the situation is worse for our economically disadvantaged students: only 24% of our economically disadvantaged students third graders are proficient or better. (Source: www.kidsdata.org/santaclarareport.) We Want to: Make sure families have the support and the tools they need to promote literacy. Insure children get the individualized help they need and teachers have the opportunity to develop the skills and acquire the tools needed to deal with the diverse needs of the students in their classes. Our Goal: Increase the percentage of children performing at the proficiency level on third grade reading tests and narrow the disparity that exists between socioeconomic groups. How to Get Involved: Issue Brief #3 - April 2008 - Third Grade Reading Scores :: Indicator 6: High School Graduation Rates The Issue: Only 83% of our Santa Clara County students graduate from high school. Moreover, only 68% of Hispanic and 77% of African American students graduate. These low rates may be due to unidentified learning and mental health issues, inability to see the relevance of topics taught in school and lack of family and community support. (Source: Childrens Report 2005.pdf) Our Goal: Increase the percentage of students who graduate from high school and narrow the disparity that exists between ethnic groups.
